KEVIN MARTS
Playing Experience
Kevin Marts is a highly competitive, life-long volleyball player. He has experienced
great success in his 20+ years of playing college, club, and adult volleyball. In college, Kevin was a middle blocker for
Washington State University. He served as captain and president of the WSU men’s club team for four years and was named
to the NIRSA National Championship All-Tournament team and to the Pacific Conference All-Tournament Team four times. Two times
Kevin was named the Pacific Conference Tournament MVP. After his career at WSU, Kevin played on NIKE select club teams as
an opposite and continues to play outdoor and indoor in men’s AA/Open competitions. In 2010, Kevin was named MVP of
the NAGVA Open indoor championships held at the Portland Convention Center.
Coaching Experience
Kevin was an assistant
coach for the WSU women’s team for 2 years under Brian Heffernan and also coached the WSU men’s club team. He
won two state championships while assistant coach at Colfax HS, and has coached juniors with various clubs (Palouse Jrs,
Moscow VBC, Northwest Juniors, and Cowlitz Volleyball Club). He has coached and organized many volleyball camps throughout
the state at WSU, Gonzaga, LCC, and various NBC camps, and also coaches privately.
Coaching Philosophy
I focus much
attention on technique. I see many hitters who are not maximizing potential because of an incorrect approach or arm swing,
or many passers who would be more effective if they changed their body angle. A motto I live by is, “If you can’t
pass you can’t play.” As a middle blocker and opposite hitter I wanted to be more than just a front row player.
I did not want to be subbed out in the back row because I was a “tall kid.” I spent years under great coaches
and learned many valuable techniques that I want to pass on to my players. I have never stopped analyzing the game of volleyball
and I enjoy coaching athletes who are sponges for information. I enjoy helping players realize not only what is happening
on their side of the net, but how they can defeat their opponent by realizing weak spots and making purposeful decisions.
MICHAL-ANN WATTS
Playing Experience
Michal-Ann is a setter who played at Lower Columbia College in Longview and Saint Martin’s
University in Lacey, WA. While at LCC she helped her team clinch back to back league titles and 8th and 3rd
place finishes at the NWAAC tournament. She earned first team all league honors in 1995 & 1996 for the Western league
and first team honors at the NWAAC championships in 1996.
At Saint Martin’s in 1997/98, Michal set school records in assists
per game, assists per match and season assists. She led the Saints to divisional playoffs both years and was named offensive
player of the week twice.
Michal is still involved heavily in playing. She plays competitively in Open level outdoor grass tournaments
and indoor Women’s A. She is also a Junior National certified referee, and referees high school, college, and club volleyball.
Coaching Experience
Since 1997, Michal has continually coached summer volleyball camps, high school,
club, and college teams. She has organized camps at Saint Martin’s University and Lower Columbia College, and worked
at Washington State University camps. She was an assistant coach for Cowlitz 16’s, Northwest Juniors 17’s, and
assists with Lower Columbia College.
Coaching Philosophy
I believe in
creating a passion for volleyball in each of my players. If you do not love the game you will not perform to the best of your
ability. Throughout the years the game has witnessed many changes and players need to be faster, stronger, and smarter. What
I bring to the court is the mental aspect of the game; especially in setting. A truly great setter is a player who recognizes
strengths and weaknesses and knows how to be a natural leader.
